Crieff Allotments

27 February 2024 By Donna

The Crieff Allotment Association was formed in 2011 after former Chairman John put an article in the local paper to see if anyone shared his desire to grow his own fruit and vegetables. After gaining much interest from the local community, the newly-formed group approached the authorities to enquire about land for an allotment site. The authorities could not offer anything suitable, and so they contacted all landowners in the Crieff area. Eventually able to lease some land from the Crieff Hydro, work started on the new site in the Autumn of 2012.

Individual allotment work started that Spring although not all the available plots were let out yet. There were around 20 taken at the time until membership rose to fill all the plots in 2014. Despite the late start and fewer members, production was good that year. As part of the deal with the Climate Challenge Fund, the members were required to record all produce and recycling over the first season, so that the CO2 emission saving could be calculated. At the end of the season, not only had the members produced masses of healthy fruit and vegetables for themselves, friends and families, but had saved over 11025kg of CO2 emissions.
